TecLab: Shaping the Future of Rail

TecLab at Deutsche Bahn is an agile innovation hub within the technology sector, dedicated to advancing the overall railway system. Our goal is to enhance the efficiency and reliability of rail transport by developing new technologies, processes, and systems – from the initial idea to operational maturity. A key area of expertise includes alternative rail drives and fuels, as well as green features like driver assistance systems. Here, we develop strategies to ensure climate neutrality in rail transport by 2040. Additionally, we establish unified standards and methods for cross-business technical maintenance regulations with company-wide applicability.

With our open testing platform, the Advanced TrainLab, we explore highly innovative technology topics in the rail industry, research, and DB business units. Here, we test feasibility, engineering, safety and risk management, as well as implementation, approval, and clearance. We conduct measurement runs and organize high-profile journeys for politics, business, and science. For six years, we have been testing new technologies and vehicle components in the fields of ATO, ETCS, sensors, connectivity, traction, fuels, and wheel/rail interface management.

TecLab defines company-wide standards and principles, evaluates results, and transfers them into innovation programs or commissioned projects. We identify new relevant technologies and set up suitable testing projects. Together, we are shaping the future of rail transport.
